Yokohama Zoological Gardens - ZOORASIA

I went to Yokohama Zoological Gardens named ZOORASIA, in Kanagawa Pref. with my husband. It was sunny and everyone looks to enjoy. Animals also feel easy and have a nap:-)

ZOORASIA raises especially precious animals in danger of disappearing. 68kinds and 400animals are in there, like Okapi, Indian Lion, and Golden Snub-nosed Monkey. It has reproduction center and research facility of rare animals.

■　Asian Tropical Forest

1-101.　Indian Elephant

Just after the entrance, there are 3 Indian Elephants. 2 cow elephants and 1 bull elephant. Raskmal, 13 years old bull elephant has tusks. It is easy to find him. He is the one which comes onto other 2 cow elephants with his nose:-)

2-102.　Rothschild's Mynah、103.　Crested Argus、104. Bulwer's Pheasant

Rothschild's Mynah is a white birds which only lives in Bali. As to Crested Argus and Bulwer's Pheasant, they are breeded only at ZOORASIA in Japan. Crested Argus has long tail feather(1.7m) and its size is biggest among birds. The name of "Argus"'s origin comes from Giant with 100 eyes who appears in Greek mythology.

3-105.　Bornean Orang-utan

Bornean Orang-utan is uniparous animal. It does not bear child Orang-utan once a year like human-being. That means one Orang-utan will be born in 8 years. Breeding of Orang-utan is really difficult as it bears a few babies during its life.

There are 17 kinds of Penguin on the earth. In Japan, 11kinds of Penguin with the number of 2500 are breeded. Humboldt Penguin accouunts for 1,450（as of December 31, 2001) among 2500. 70% of Humboldt Penguin in the north hemisphere are breeded in Japan.

Regarding Wild Ass, there is either ZOORASIA(Mongolian Wild Ass) or Kanazawa Zoo(Somalian Wild Ass). As to Mongolian Wild Ass, only a few zoo in China raises it in the world other than ZOORASIA. Next year, "he" welcomes "she" from Shanghai.
